Steam Boilers Through Time

1700s: Early steam

The dawn of steam engineering began with atmospheric engines. These early boilers operated at very low pressures, primarily used for pumping water out of mines.

1800s: Fire-tube and Lancashire boilers

The 19th century saw the perfection of the fire-tube design. Sir William Fairbairn introduced the Lancashire boiler in 1844, featuring two internal flues.

1900s: Water-tube boilers

The demand for higher pressures led to water-tube boilers like the Babcock & Wilcox models, which became the standard for naval vessels.

Today: Modern boilers

Modern engineering focuses on extreme efficiency and automated controls. Today's boilers are compact powerhouses with real-time diagnostics.
